Contemporary Hawaiian women face political struggles on multiple fronts. Because the political overthrow of the sovereign nation of Hawai’i was accompanied by a “civilizing” mission that explicitly denigrated the culture, history, beliefs, and practices of the Hawaiian people, the project of decolonization is inherently multifaceted. It is at once intellectual, political, artistic, and spiritual, and the reclamation of the colonized body is at the center of this work.
