As Papua New Guinea marks 50 years of independence, this article reflects on the nation’s progress and ongoing challenges in maternal and child health. Drawing on insights from the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) program, it highlights the importance of resilient health systems and collaborative partnerships. Despite improvements in life expectancy and reduced child mortality, PNG continues to face high maternal and infant mortality rates, widespread childhood stunting, and infectious diseases. The HMHB initiative, involving local and international partners, emphasizes integrated, community-based research and interventions. The article advocates for sustained efforts in antenatal care, nutrition, and adolescent health to ensure a healthier, more prosperous future for PNG.
