Women in Parliaments in the Pacific Region

Pacific Island states are at the bottom of the international league table for the representation of women in parliament. Despite considerable efforts, progress on increasing representation is extraordinarily slow. There are 3 main explanations: 1. this is due to cultural beliefs 2. the problem is women’s socio-economic status. 3. there are obstacles for women in the electoral and parliamentary institutions that warrant introducing legislated minimum representation. Each has signifianct deficiencies.
