Security issues for women and children in Papua New Guinea

In 2021 a woman at a protest in Papua New Guinea (PNG) caused a stir by carrying a placard reading ‘PNG is not safe to live as a female’. She was drawing attention to the fact that in Papua New Guinea, women and children endure shockingly high levels of family and sexual violence, with rates of abuse estimated to be among the highest in the world outside of a conflict zone.
