Theorizing processes of recent historical change in Papua New Guinea entails coming to terms with a triad of forces that we can identify as capitalism, democracy, and the state. These, of course, are broad terms, and we need to translate them into the specific forms they are taking in Papua New Guinea. In what follows we exemplify and follow up these generalizations with more specific local evidence.
