The Kiribati Family Health and Support Study, funded jointly by the Government of Australia and the United Nations Population Fund and implemented jointly by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and the Government of Kiribati, is part of the global World Health Organization multicountry study on violence against women. It is only the third such comprehensive study conducted in the Pacific region and the only one in Micronesia, the other two having been conducted in Polynesia (Samoa – 2000/2001) and Melanesia (Solomon Islands – 2008/2009). The study sought to quantify the prevalence of violence against women and children and identify the most common causes of violence. This information is intended to form the basis for interventions that would in the long term minimise and, it is hoped, ultimately eliminate the drivers of violence against women and children.
